The coronavirus pandemic continues to be active around the world. Despite the epidemic, Medikro products are safe to use. Due to our disposable flow sensor and the design of the pressure hose, there is no risk of cross-contamination between patients through the equipment. In research situations, nursing staff are best protected by using personal protective equipment in accordance with the instructions given by their own organization.
Use of a bacterial filter during a spirometry study
Bacterial filters for spirometry were developed about 30 years ago to protect the device and the patient from the risk of cross-contamination when moving from mere blowing to flow volume measurement in research. The flow sensors were washable at that time, i.e. all patients studied were blowing through the same sensor, so a bacterial filter was needed to protect the flow sensor and the next patient to be blown. For this reason, Medikro developed a spirometer with a disposable flow sensor in which the air blown by the patient never ends up inside the device through a pressure hose.
The purpose of the bacterial filter is to protect the patient and a spirometer whose flow sensor is not disposable. The bacterial filter does not protect staff or the study space, as heavy blowing often predisposes to coughing during blowing, allowing the patient to cough directly into the room air, taking the filter out of their mouth during coughing. Therefore, instructing the patient on the correct cough technique prior to the study is desirable (e.g., coughing up a sleeve or disposable paper). If desired, the bacterial filter can also be used with Medikro devices, as long as other protection has also been provided. Both the filter and the flow sensor are disposable.
